2011 Audition Information and Requirements

Auditions for the 2011 Edition of the WVU Marching Band will be held at the Creative Arts Center on the Evansdale Campus of West Virginia University in Morgantown for each of the following dates. 

  • Brass and Woodwinds - Saturday, April 16, 2011
  • Color Guard - Saturday and Sunday, April 16-17, 2011
  • Percussion - Friday and Saturday, April 29-30, 2011
  • Feature Twirlers - Preliminary Screening Video due Tuesday, March 1, 2011; Invited Twirler Finalist auditions held on Saturday, April 16, 2011

Audition Registration begins at 9 a.m. on April 16th in the lobby of the Creative Arts Center. Registration for Feature Twirlers on April 16th will be held at 1:30 at the WVU Band Practice Field, with the audition beginning at 2:00 p.m.


AUDITION REQUIREMENTS:

Auditions will conclude at approximately 12:00 noon.

*Please be prepared to play:
a) F, Bb, Eb, and Ab concert scales as well as a two octave (if possible) Bb concert chromatic scale,
b) Either a solo, an etude, or a selection from a marching or concert band piece,
c) Two selections - Hail West Virginia and Camino Real (If you have not yet received these selections in the mail from us, please contact our office at This email address is being protected from spambots. d) A short sight-reading exercise.

*If for some reason you are unable to attend the above audition dates, you can still audition - simply contact our office and discuss the possibility of setting up a personal audition on campus at an alternate time.  If you need to schedule a personal audition, you are encouraged to do so as close to the actual April 16th audition date as possible.  Most of the positions for the 2011 WVU Band will be filled on April 16th.

There will be a “mini-camp” on Friday April 29th and Saturday, April 30th, which will serve as the audition for the 2011 WVU Drumline.  The hours of the camp will be 3:00 p.m. for returning vets and 4:30 p.m. for prospective new members until ?? p.m. on Friday evening for individual auditions, and 8:00 a.m. to 6:00 p.m. on Saturday, with the cuts being announced around lunch time.

Note: Students are responsible for their own lodging, transportation and meals during the camp.  All students selected as members of the 2011 Drumline will be required to attend two weekend camps during the summer (June 17-19, and July 15-17).  All selected members will receive detailed information about these summer camps following the April auditions.  All Returning WVU Drumline members are required to re-audition.

*All students interested in becoming a member of the WVU Drumline are strongly encouraged to attend the April 29-30 camp, as all spots in the 2011 line will be filled at this camp.  However, if you cannot make it to this camp, you may still be able to audition EARLY.   You can contact Percussion Coordinator This email address is being protected from spambots. COLOR GUARD AND TWIRLER REQUIREMENTS:

Color Guard:

There will be a “mini-camp” on Saturday April 16th and Sunday, April 17th, which will serve as the audition for the 2011 WVU Color Guard.  All prospective members (returning or new) will be required to attend BOTH days.  The hours for Saturday are 9:00 a.m. until approximately 5:00 p.m.  Anyone interested in the Weapon Lines should be prepared to stay also from 7-9 p.m. for a Weapons Clinic.  The hours for Sunday are 9:00 a.m. until approximately 2:00 p.m. (including a lunch break).

Feature Twirler(s):

The audition for the Feature Twirler(s) is a two-step process which includes submitting a video (DVD) (with a deadline of March 1st) and then being invited to audition at the April 16th date.  Registration on April 16th will be held at 1:30 at the WVU Band Practice Field, with the audition beginning at 2:00 p.m.

Please note that there will NOT be any alternative date to the April 16th auditions for Feature Twirler(s). Returning WVU Feature Twirlers are required to re-audition.
